Questions
Frequently asked questions
Your data
Do my files go to a server?
No. Kleurstaal works entirely in your browser. Photos, SVGs and colours stay on your own device. The site technically allows no outgoing connections, with one exception: see the next question.
What is that one exception?
The font pairing tool can fetch the fonts from Google Fonts, but only when you press the button. Google then sees your IP address, as with any website that uses Google Fonts. Your text is not sent.
Do I need to create an account?
No. No account, no email address, no cookies to follow you.
The tools
Is it really free?
Yes. No limit on how often, no ads, no watermark. Kleurstaal is a free tool from nealvdv, part of Handig.
Which colour notations does Kleurstaal know?
HEX (3, 4, 6 or 8 characters), RGB, HSL, HWB, HSV, OKLCH, OKLab, CIE Lab and LCH, color(display-p3), CMYK and all 148 CSS colour names. Internally Kleurstaal calculates in sRGB, like every ordinary screen.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in a recent browser. Large photos do go more smoothly on a computer, because it has more memory.
Limits
How big can an image be?
Up to 25 MB. Kleurstaal works on a smaller copy: for a palette that is more than enough, and it keeps things quick.
Does Kleurstaal work with print colours?
Only halfway. CMYK here is the simple formula without a print profile, and Kleurstaal doesn’t know Pantone. For print work, ask your printer for the right values.
Is good contrast enough for accessibility?
It’s an important part, but not everything. Font size, weight, shadows and what lies behind the text matter too. Test with real people, and never let colour say something on its own.
