Contrast matrix of your palette

Paste the colours of your brand. Kleurstaal puts them in a grid, every colour as text on every other one, and shows which pairs are safe to use.

Questions

Good to know

  1. Why a matrix and not just the contrast tool?

A brand quickly has six colours, and so thirty combinations. The grid shows them all at once, so you see which text may go on which background without trying them one by one.

  2. What does large mean in the grid?

The ratio lies between 3 and 4.5 to 1. That is enough for large text (from 24 pixels, or 18.66 pixels bold) and for the edges of buttons and icons, but not for ordinary text.

  3. How many colours can I test?

Up to 24. More makes a grid nobody reads any more. Repeated colours count once.

How it works

Contrast matrix in three steps

  1. Paste your palette

One colour per line, in any notation. A name in front is fine: brand: #1d3f96.

  2. Read the grid

Rows are text colours, columns backgrounds. Every cell shows the ratio and whether it reaches AA, AAA or large text only.

  3. Take the pairs with you

Filter on AA or AAA, read the list of safe pairs and copy the grid as Markdown or CSV.
